How to take care of banana plants when they are flowering?

I want to know how to take care of a banana plant when it has started flowering.

We can only grow musa basju here - the hardy banana - and it dies back in winter, so no flowers or fruit for us. But in all my travels to other parts of the world, it would appear that bananas pretty much seem to take care of themselves.
