I tried starting an avocado plant from a pit immersed half way in a jar of water. It cracked open just like it was supposed to, but it has been weeks and a tap root hasn't been sent down! It is in diffused sunlight and I change the water about twice a week. Am I doing something wrong, being impatient, or is the pit just dead?

It should take 4 - 8 weeks... I have started a pineapple from a whole pineapple I bought from the store, it is looking good, and I hear it will make a pineapple in about 2 years... hope I can keep it alive that long.

I have tried to do this several times and have never been successful. I did finally get root starts a few times, but shortly after, the seed basically molded/rotted. I don't know what I did wrong either. At this point, I've just given up. :(

I haven't ever been successful in attempting this but I wish I was because avacado's are sooo expensive!
