Help! What caused my Camphor Tree and surrounding shrubs to die after 20 years?

A few months ago we noticed all of our shrubs dying one after the other (most have been removed now can be seen in the attached photos), but there a a couple left on the left side. It appears my camphor tree has bit the dust too. We live in southern California so weather is nice year round. Anyone have any ideas on what could have caused this mass extinction? One neighbor suggested subterranean termites -- could that be a possibility? Thanks in advance for the help!

Weed and feed fertilizer applied by you and/or a neighbor will absolutely do that.

Another possibility, although remote is that a herbicide drift got 'em...from an aerial spray.
