Hi all, I'm trying to determine what roses to add to my rose garden. It's partially shaded and currently has a small pink bush (as in both small in bush and flower) and a miniature knock out red "tree" bush. I'm looking for other colors to fill in the blanks, namely a yellow, a white, an orange, and maybe a purpley blue? Are there other colors I don't know about? I like fades into other colors, but not really the stripey ones. I also prefer a classic rose shape, leaning away from moss roses or cabbage roses with many layered petals like peonies, if that makes sense? I also already have those miniature roses, so different shapes would be a nice contrast (I think). I also would like fragrance if possible. Here's what I've found locally so far:

Aldis: $8.49
  • Hybrid tea Blue Girl (Purple-pink, full sun, fragrant, 4-9; not my favorite petal shape but seems to be a neat color)
  • Large-flower climber New Year (Orange, slight fragrance, 6-9, unsure if I like it but good shape)
  • Climber Perfume Breeze (White, strong fragrance, can't see the flower so great from the ad)
  • Hybrid tea Beautiful Day (Peach, moderate fragrance, 6-9)
Lowes: $9.98-12-14$
  • Arizona (light-strong fragrance, pictures show way too many colors so I have no idea what's up with this one)
  • Hybrid tea Midas Touch (Yellow, moderate fragrance)
  • Floribunda SunSprite (yellow, strong fragrance, and the package says "grow three together? Unsure if it means there's three roots or what. I like it more than New Day)
  • New Day (Yellow, seems to be multi-petaled so I like it less the above options, but it's extremely fragrant)
  • Iceberg (white with strong fragrance)
  • Floribunda True Sincerity (Orange-to-scarlet fade, super pretty but mild scent, full sun)
Local nursery: $30??
  • Peace (No further details, thanks guys - yellow to pink petals and fragrant)
  • Orange Glow knock-out (No further info)
Menards: $11.99 no rebate
  • Hybrid tea Pink peace (VERY Pink, duh, full sun, fragrant)
  • Grandiflora Lagerfeld (Light pink, purple?, full sun, strong, just above my zone (7-10))
  • Climbing Queen Elizabeth (Pink, full sun, mild)
  • Grandiflora Shreveport (Orange-red?, full sun, fragrant, 7-9)

I've also learned I need to learn the difference between rose types, haha! Anyway, any input is appreciated!

Hello friend. For the Akron, Ohio area, Knock Out roses and shrub roses are generally considered the easiest to grow, due to their disease resistance, vigorous growth, and heavy blooming. I would have a soil test done on any garden area before planting to ensure the best match.

I would be sure and match the soil pH with roses in question. Knock Outs do best in a slightly acidic soil 5.5 to 6.5 where Floribunda True Sincerity do best in 6.5 to 7. pH. All roses need at least a very minimum of 6 hrs of full Sun. Good luck and keep us posted on how it turns out.

I’m definitely going to have to run many acidic soil tests with how much I’m interested by; any recommendations for tests?

If you are looking for a climber, my Zephrine does well, not in intense sun at all. some shade. its thornless, flowers smell awesome. I keep it pruned to about 15 feet. It is on my deck side, sits inside one of those stand alone round trellis, think its called an Obelisk---its black steel. I do know that shrub roses in general are tough little guys.

  • New Day (Yellow, seems to be multi-petaled so I like it less the above options, but it's extremely fragrant - lighter yellow too I think)
  • Iceberg (white with strong fragrance)

Alright, I've updated my list, and I think I'm leaning towards Grandifloras and floribundas as they SEEM more disease resistant than hybrid teas...any commentary on that? I don't think I have room for climbing at this point, so here's my trimmed list:

Aldis: $8.49
Lowes: $9.98-12-14$
Local nursery: $30??
Menards: $11.99 no rebate
SO it's looking like the color options I have/prefer are:
  • Purple: Blue Girl or Lagerfeld
  • Orange: Arizona or maybe Shreveport? Worried Shreve is too red.
  • Yellow: Midas or SunSprite
  • White: Iceberg only local option, maybe ask local gardener where he got JP II rose...
  • EXTRAS: Pink Peace for vibrant pink, True Sincerity for orange-to-red, Peace for yellow-to-pink
