What am I and why am I dying?

Hi! We purchased this plant from a nursery a few months back. The bottom leaves keep turning brown and falling off. You can see how white the stalk(?) is and I don't think that's normal. I used sharp trimmers to remove the dead from the ends of the remaining leaves and that didn't seem to bother it.

1) What kind of plant is this?
2) Is the white normal? If no, could you please offer suggestions?

Better photos! I've also contacted the nursery. I'll post their response once I hear back in case it helps anyone else.
