I had vacation for 3 weeks. During this time I organized the construction of greenhouse. I dug the ground in this greenhouse. I painted 10 chairs and painted a large terrace. I weeded the garden and planted a lot of strawberries. I cut the grass for 2 days. And each day I said: I'm happy,I am happy! I was so tired and I couldn't stand up at the end of vacation. Now I'm at work and have a rest. :D How about you?

I do the same. Some vacation days are at home to do garden stuff etc. Depending, if there is an event on a weekend that will take me out of my usual house routine, then I might take an extra day off work. I had to in June take a few full weeks off, without anywhere to go so I would not lose my vacation time, so stayed home and enjoyed it all.
I am looking forward to retiring next August 2017,

I hear you!

I can only truly take a vacation by leaving my house. If I take a "staycation" I will feel compelled to attack house cleaning and other projects, which is productive but not very relaxing.

That was hard work and not vacation but the upside is that you had enough time for gardening; something you would not have been able to achieve without one.

I guess you will need to rest weekends.

I agree that if you stay at home for your holiday you work. If you go away you can sit and read and paint your nails and wonder about and sightsee and lunch and dinner and snack and sip, sounds lovely.

Vacations for me is about resting, about spending time with my family, about doing things I enjoy doing and definitely not about working. But the thing is that maybe for you gardening is working and for others is just a hobby so it will depend on how you see this activity but I enjoy it and don't see it as work.

I sold my cottage just for that reason, every time I would go down to it I would spend the whole time working on the yard or the house and not getting the time to my self. I can stay home and not work as hard in the yard.

Yes, I agree. When you are at home on vacation from work, you tend to take up a change of occupation - housework and garden work. So it is a vacation from one thing, but not really a time of relaxation. Going overseas and spending time with family or friends would be more relaxing, although you would still want to be out and about, shopping around and seeing new places etc. But it is a whole different atmosphere and more relaxing, so that when you return to work you don't feel so tired as though you could now do with a vacation.
