Hello everyone,

My name is Udi Hess and I’m developing a new product in the gardening field called SeedSmart - a smart gardening system with advanced seed tapes.

I’m very interested in understanding the challenges you, as hobby gardeners, face during plant growth. Are there specific issues you encounter, such as uneven germination, weeds, or soil problems?

Would you be willing to share your experiences? Any feedback would be invaluable to me and help me create a solution that meets your needs.

Thank you so much!

Udi

Uneven germination...usually caused by uneven watering and/or uneven seed covering dept. Both are easily preventable.

Weeds...not a problem here. Extensive use of cover crops minimizes exposure of uncovered soil to weed seeds. Even large garden space can be weeded easily with stirrup hoe in just minutes.

Soil problems...not a problem due to techniques employed which promote healthy vibrant soil e.g. crop rotation, green manure application, chop and drop legumes. cover crops, generous composted cow manure amendments. My soil routinely tests out with a nutrient density score of over 90%.

If your new product comes in even more expensive than current seed tape products, I predict it will fail.

There are always some, Meadowlark. I see people buying individual, young vegetable plants for the price of 200 seeds of the same thing, but I don't think they are the people on the forum.
Hoe twice before sowing and weeds are minimal, and a lot of things I sow in weed free compost in a seed tray and plant out, that makes uneven germination irrelevant. I also save quite a lot of seed, keep it well and use it soon, no problems.
Soil problems that can be solved with a tape are going to be pretty minimal, most people here seem to recognise that building up the soil is a first, basic step.

would be happy, however, to hear what challenges you think will be solved as a result of using an upgraded "smart seeding tape"? And are there any challenges that justify a higher cost?

I have never had any challenges that would be solved by using seed tape, the only advantage I see is having the seeds spaced out, and experience and practice allows me to do that with loose seed. In what way is this tape 'smart'?

Seedsmart seed tapes can help with consistent planting and germination. If priced right, they could boost yields.

Can you elaborate on "upgraded seeding tape". How is it superior to other seed tapes?

I can't comment on if it justifies a higher cost/price unless I know how exactly it is being upgraded.

In order for me to plan and assemble an "upgraded seeding tape", I ask you to define for me the challenges for which you still do not have a proper solution using the methods accepted so far.
Such as: irrigation and fertilization control. Uniform germination, weed control, pest control, and more.
Thank you for your cooperation.

So, how is it being upgraded @udi hess?
I don't think it has been upgraded yet. I am under the impression that he would like us to identify problems so that he can then seek solutions to them and find justification for accrediting his tape with some superiority which, at the moment, he only wishes it to possess. Seeking to upgrade his product is a laudable, but I am afraid he is doomed to failure relying on us, personally I have no problem putting seeds in the ground.
I could be wrong.

I thank you for your honesty and willingness to encourage.
But I think that those who are involved in the field can best define the challenges that face the perfect implementation.
Therefore, I still insist on trying to extract insights from you that will help create a product that will upgrade performance without detracting from the pleasure.
Thank you.

Suggest you @udi hess use the search function on this forum to find posts about the topics you are interested in... for example "seed germination" search yields over 10 pages of posts.

Many many more on " irrigation and fertilization control. Uniform germination, weed control, pest control".

In my opinion, seed tape doesn't and can not solve any problem except for accurate spacing and then, not every seed will germinate so you have spaces between that are left empty. I don't and won't use them as they cost more without being "upgraded" and are just not worth a dime to me.

I do what every gardener does: I plant more seed than necessary and then thin those that are growing too closely together. This way you fix the problem of not every seed germinating and don't have empty spaces in your row. It's a simple method that almost completely eliminates problems.

I think the OP is barking up the wrong tree with seed tapes. They aren't huge sellers in the first place. They never have flown off the shelves.

As a hobby gardener, I’d say some of the biggest challenges are uneven germination, dealing with weeds, and sometimes getting the soil just right. It can be tough to get everything perfect, especially when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
