We used to live in a city where all the plum trees in town had black knot. My parents included :( We moved to a small town about half an hour away and we hoped there wouldn't be black knot here. We've walked all around the neighborhood many many times and have never even seen another plum tree.

We planted 2 european plum trees.
A greengage 3 seasons ago and an italian 2 seasons ago.

The greengage is already more than 12 feet tall. Last year it gave us over 200 fruit. The italian hasn't grown much and still no fruit.

Anyways, a few nights ago we saw what is almost definitely black knot :(
I know they say to cut it off 6 inches down right away. But this tree is young, and the know is almost at the base of one of only three core branches.

On the one hand, I'd love to do whatever I can to prevent the sickness spreading further on the tree and on the other tree (which is like 15 feet away). But a part of me wonders if that is even worth it. What if we cut this off and then it still just continues to spread anyways. We have no idea how it got here. Like I said we haven't seen any other trees around the neighborhood. So I just worry that it would reappear regardless of what we do.

We have both been so sad for 3 days now since we saw it. Kind of feels like what is the point of even trying to grow plum trees.

What do you think we should do?

Thanks you
