I’m reading that you shouldn’t plant potatoes near melons because they attract aphids and leech nutrients from the soil. Has anyone had success planting them together, or should I avoid it?

Water going downhill is what leeches the nutrients (salts) out, not a plant. Potatoes are pretty heavy feeders and will consume nutrients if that is what you mean but having a melon planted in the vacinity isn't a problem unless the vines run over the potatoes which can self root and then could draw nutrients from the potatoes.

Tomatoes and peppers seem to be more susceptible to aphids than cucurbits or potatoes.
