Unless I am ill informed England is still also called Briton and the people there in British or some times shortened to Brits. I mentioned 'Brits because this is where the events took place.

England is a country within Great Britain @La Garden and the people are English. Britons or Brits are part of Great Britain. There are four countries here, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and they became the United Kingdom of Great Britain in 1801.
