Marsh Samphire

Bit late this year, usually bigger by now.

Had a small dish for lunch, boiled with some butter and sea salt added

Not to be confused with Rock Samphire...

Different family, grows on the coast but unlike Marsh Samphire grows above the intertidal zone and tastes of Pernod

I love to pick it and add it to my grub I know it as poor Mans Asparagus, sometimes I flash fry or I just wash and eat. Lovely food to pick I just take prune the new growth and leave the little things to grow on and multiply I get it a lot grow in the coast by me and I love it(think I said that lol)

I prune it too Daren, some folk pull the whole plant out, but that can wreck a bed in a few seasons.

Been picking 20 years or so at this particular estuary, it's spread from a small patch to most of the length of it in that time

I never head of it, but I guess it is UK plant. I don;t know that we have something similar in the United States, but it is a big country. I have heard of a few varieties of vegetables that grow here that are regional specialties, that were not on my radar, in fact I had never heard of them at all, so who knows??

Can't find any reference to it growing in the states, but you might have a similar species, can't see why it wouldn't colonise suitable estuaries
