Hello,
I'm new here and I have (what I consider to be) a pumpkin emergency!
Let me preface this: I am 100% new to gardening of any type. I did try a google search for this issue, but I may have used all the wrong key words - I don't know.
So, here is the issue: the pumpkin plant that my son brought home at the end of the school year has flourished amazingly in our little garden bed on our patio. It was making great progress until we had some hail in the middle of last week. A crack developed in the main vine coming from the original roots. It wasn't super bad, and we observed that it was still growing daily, so we left it alone. Yesterday I checked on it and it looks like this:
I'm freaking out! Can it keep growing and thriving with THIS big of a crack?!
I took a picture of the underside of the rest of the vine at this point, as well:
It all still looks super healthy, but I'm worried! My kids are so excited to grow pumpkins this year, and I don't want to let them down!!
What, if anything, can I do about that crack?? Can the rest of the vine continue to thrive with it? How should I promote the other parts of the vine to take root (I read that they do that, right? The parts that touch the dirt will eventually dig down in, right?)
AH! and I just took a closer look at that second picture in this post, and I see another small split on the vine portion to the left in the image!
What do I do to help this succeed!?
Thanks for any help,
Cat
