Around here chili cook-offs are the big thing. Churches sponsor them, sell pies and cookies, and give a prize to the winner. It's hard to find judges that aren't related to the contestants, so complete strangers are often waved off the highway and talked into judging the chili. Locals know to stay upwind of the chili pots, but strangers often leave with tears in their eyes, seeking a bottle of Pepto-Bismol.
