I have knats many of them.they seem to like a banana tree I rescued. I've tried a few things from online help but didn't do much if anything at all, so I moved outside for few days, now getting black from stem to leave. Knats have just about gone in the house, but are still on banana tree soil that's outside day and night, many of them.

Gnats usually start as larvae in the soil (there are sometimes fruit gnats as well, but I doubt that's the case here). To get rid of them either replace the soil (But it will be hard to lose all of them) or treat it with some sort of insecticide that won't harm your plant. The gnats do like it wet, so careful not to over water, and they live on organic material in the soil, so don't overdo the compost.

Gnats are not causing the browning. The browning is probably caused by environmental change and temperatures. If you want to get rid of the gnats mix 1 oz spinosad per gallon of water in a watering can and drench the soil.
