I use sisal because it is cheaper than jute. Jute is made from the fibers of the Jute plant in India. Sisal is made from the Agave plant in Mexico. I can't tell the difference in them as both are used for the same purposes, rug making.

I am out of jute but was gifted what seems to be several miles of the stretch nylon hemming used for edging upholstery. It is soft and holds up all season so the tomatoes are wearing nylons this year.

There are many interesting natural fibers that can be used to make twine.
It would be interesting to cultivate a garden of twine fiber crops.

Some of the more common fiber crops used for twine include...
• Abacá or Manila Hemp (Musa textilis) in the Banana family (Musaceae)
• Cabuya or Fique (Furcraea spp.) in the Agave family (Agavaceae)
• Coir (Cocos nucifera) in the Palm Family (Arecaceae)
• Cotton (Gossypium spp.) in the Mallow Family (Malvaceae)
• Hemp (Cannabis sativa) in the hemp Family (Cannabaceae)
• Henequen (Agave fourcroydes) in the Agave family (Agavaceae)
• Jute (Corchorus capsularis, C. olitorius) in the Mallow Family (Malvaceae)
• Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) in the Mallow Family (Malvaceae)
• Ramie (Boehmeria nivea) in the Nettle Family (Urticaceae)
• Sisal (Agave sisalana) in the Agave Family (Agavaceae)
• Walis (Sida rhombifolia) in the Mallow Family (Malvaceae)

I ran out of string recently. Some years ago there was a lot of hemp string in the bargain box an I bought loads of balls, I think it might have been 50p and I spent a fiver and got ten, but long enough ago I can't remember exactly. This time I looked around and found there has been a fivefold increase in the price, cheapest ball £2.50p , and that was not a large ball. In the end the cheapest way of buying it was white cotton string, and I had to get my bean sticks up. The missus objects to the colour, but it will soon get dirty. I'll use anything natural, that's not plastic, so It can go in the compost with the plant when it has finished.
