Help with identification and care

Hi,
I don't know what plant this is in my garden and I don't know how to care for it from year to year.
As you can see the dead branches have been cut down but they look so ugly and won't come out.
Also, many of the new branches are going brown at the ends.
Appreciate any advice and help and especially would like a name for this plant.

Yes, it flowers each year.

Iris unguicularis can look very like this in winter...before it produces flowers in late winter early spring.

Thank you. It looks like it is an Iris unguicularis.

We just left ours alone.
The leaves helped to support the flower heads.
If you trim the leaves now you risk damaging the hidden flower buds
Yes it can look straggly...but that is just the nature of the plant.
It loves to be baked in the sun..so is always very happy at the base of a wall in full sunshine.
