I was cleaning out weeds out of my garden the other day. I found a new flowering bush besides my garden, in between my garden and garage. I didn't know what it was so I asked a friend. She said it was a Rose of Sharon. I have never planted that in my yard. I did not think something like that could get carried in the wind. Can the seeds be that easily transplanted? How do you take care of them? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. The flowers are a light purple.

Aren't you lucky, having such a beautiful plant arriving in your garden and free to boot :)

Yes it is very possible for the seeds to carried in the wind, dropped by birds or even carried by insects. The seeds of Hibiscus or as you know it The Rose of Sharon take very easily.

There are quite a few varieties of Hibiscus, three of which I think ,are already mentioned on this forum under the headings 'Hibiscus as a Tree' and 'Please Help me out', both of which have quite a lot of plant information and pictures.

Am not sure what your climate is like, but have to assume that you live somewhere where Hibiscus is quite a commonly grown plant, as a seed sprouted in your garden. in which case you would find that they are very easy to grow, as they almost take care of themselves, with only additional care needed depending on the variety of your Hibiscus or your climate.

Do you have a photo of your Hibiscus with its light purple flower that you could post, as this would help identify which variety you have and therefore make it easier for us to help with any extra care instructions your plant may need.

I went out to get a picture of it, and there are no flowers on it. There was one a week ago, but not anymore. Could you tell what variety it is without the flowers blooming? I am not very knowledgeable about flowers and bushes. I know a few basics but not very much.

As I mentioned earlier there are three varieties of Hibiscus, the leaves on most are very similar to each other, but the flowers of each variety are all very distinctly different, so without a flower it would not be easy to identify which one you have.

As all the varieties need slightly different care, it would be best to make sure that you are caring for yours in the right way, and the only other way I can suggest regarding identification, is to check out the pictures of the flowers on the two Threads I mentioned earlier, and see if any of them resemble the flower you had on your bush, there is if I remember rightly, a lilac flower in one of them. :)

There is one thing I can tell you about Hibiscus, whatever variety you have, and that is - although they flower profusely in the right conditions, the flowers only last for 24hours.

Thank you for the information. Now, that makes sense as to why the flower wasn't there! I thought I might have been crazy, but my husband saw it too. I will check out the other threads for more information. Thanks again.

Know what you mean, when something like that happens, it always helps when someone else has seen it as well.:D

Regarding your Hibiscus, if you don't manage, to find all the answers to your questions in the Threads already mentioned, although, I do think that most things are covered - will be pleased to help, as best I can.

I find that I get "volunteers" in my yard, plants I didn't plant but showed up on their own. I have heard that often times birds or small animals will carry seeds much more frequently than travelling on the wind. Lucky for you that you ended up with a great plant. Another gift from nature.
