So last week I had a head of cabbage rupture. This was the day after some very heavy rainfall and I figured it just tried growing too fast.

Found another yesterday and haven't had rain in days.

I check the heads every other day for firmness and none have yet gotten very hard. Autopsy reveals plenty of airspace between leaves.

Are these signs of bolting?

If you have a dry spell in the beginning and then adequate irrigation they will explode. This usually happens when conditions change quickly between dry to wet or wet to dry.
