Hello, I have collected two different types of plants. I am hoping that these are both wild "edible" grapes, but need help identifying them.

For ease, we will consider the smooth leaf as plant #1, the fuzzy one as plant #2.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hope this link helps. Some of you pics are briars. If you lived in Texas I could tell you which were wild grapes as we only have 2 kinds and none of the pics are of them.

What a bummer! I was really hoping for at least one to be grapes. (Yes, I am in Texas)

I had a feeling the one with thorns was Briar!

But what is this one, and why does it bare fruit and look so similar to a grape? (Even the cluster looks like the grape vines they sell in the store with the grapes attached)

Hi @Montray Davis and welcome to the forums:) When asking for IDs and other gardening questions, it is useful for people to know what your climate is. You could be in Alaska or South Florida. Take a look at Chuck's profile information to the left of his post above, for example. It shows both his location and USDA Hardiness Zone, every time he posts. Both or either one of these bits of information are helpful and sometimes necessary for people to respond to your questions.(y)

None of the pictures are of edible grapes. The picture of a grapevine that you do have is of a mustang grape. The only edible wild grape in our part of Texas is called Muscadine and they aren't much for eating but they do make excellent wine and jelly. The only decent wild eating grape in Texas is way out in Southwest Texas and is called a Mountain Grape.

You have to go back to your profile to put in the needed info

Ah ok! So they are grapes, just not edible?

I guess the only option then, is to purchase some grape cuttings from a nursery or something .

I really appreciate all of the help.

I doubt if you will be able to purchase Muscadine plants. They aren't really all that good and they are invasive. Also only certain parts of Texas are conducive for growing table and wine grapes and those areas are well to the west of Austin. There is a growing wine industry in Texas but it is specialized as to certain root stocks and soils. There is a disease called Pierces disease which decimates just about all of the good edible grapes and many of the wine grapes and this disease is prevalent over most of Texas, especially the Austin area. There are a couple of good varieties that can be purchased however that are resistant to Pierces. One is a wine grape called Black Spanish and another is a table grape called Victoria Red.. So basically what I am saying is that wild grapes in Texas suck unless you make homemade wine and jelly

Montray, welcome from Central Texas! Chuck has given good advice on grapes. May I suggest that instead of investing time, money, and effort into grapes, you consider other fruit, like blackberries, or peach trees, or pecans (not really fruit, but quite tasty!). All of these do well in our area and aren't nearly as difficult as grapes.

I suppose you could call it a grape but that is a sub-species. Those berries will turn black and get about as big as a small marble. Eat one. I doubt if you will want another. Even the Muscadine grapes aren't worth eating. They are full of hard seeds and the skin is very thick. There is no meat in them, only juice, and they are the only wild grape in our area worth a damn, and then only for wine and jelly. When I was a kid every summer we would go out and harvest them and dad would make wine and mom would make jelly. That is all they are good for. And you have to know what your are doing to make wine out of them. Texas is not California. This is not a place to grow grapes.........................or apples either

We have a grape vine that is very prolific with the leaves since it is already rainy season. I don't think those are grape vines. They are similar to the ornamental plant that we call mickey mouse because it bears yellow fruits with big ears like a mouse. Here is the photo of our grape vine that is crawling on the exterior wall of our kitchen. I hope you get a good look so you would be familiar with the leaves of the grape vine.

I read through the thread, did anyone ever identify the first plant?

As you guessed, it's greenbriar (Smilax roundifolia) - and no, not grape.

@Chuck : Ah cool! I guess I better get to learning how to make jelly! Thank you so much for all of your help! Very helpful!

@Corzhens : Sweet! Thanks for the help identifying! They look great! I suppose the only way to get true grapes here in Texas is at my local nursery? :( I really want to grow wild grapes, so, this kind of blows that mine are not edible.

@Arielphf : I think chuck said one was a mustang grape - not edible? The other being a Briar ?

I opened one of the "berries", and the inside looks extremely similar to a grape. I think Chuck is probably right -- it being a subspecies of grape. I really appreciate everyone helping me identify these beautiful plants! :D

I grow Mars grapes, I know the will grow in your zone, check with a real garden center to see if they will do well in your area.
Well, just about every nursery has them in my hometown, so, I would only imagine they do ? Otherwise, why would they sell them in Texas, right ?
