I purchased seed potatoes, some were large so I cut them. When I was able to plant I noticed white covering over the cut portion and some were a little mushy. Are these safe for planting?

I rarely plant potatoes but I think they need eyes to grow. They turn into mush in the ground anyway as they root and form the plant so it's safe, if they grow. The white is probably mold. I'm no expert on potatoes though.

My guess would be they are safe but starting to rot. I always treat the cuts with something to help prevent rot, e.g. sulphur, ag. lime, etc. but in your case it's too late for that. They may very well rot completely when planted rather than grow out.

Lots of people cut the large spuds before planting, so there is no danger in them poisoning you. On the other hand, that one was cut long before planting, so it might turn to mush in the soil.
