My lavetera comes back each year and I cut it down to nothing because it gets so leggy. Maybe they behave differently in Australia

Lavatera needs warm and dry weather. While perennial lavatera is frost-hardy, it does best in a sunny spot.
Lavatera plants are cousins to the hollyhock.
