We have two beautiful Privet hedges on the sides of our property. The privets were almost 5 meters tall, we cut them down to 1,8 meters the same length as our razor wire fence. they filled out quickly, and are looking really lovely.

We used to trim and top them manually but recently acquired a hedge cutter. How often should I trim them, and any other advice on keeping them neat, tidy and beautiful?

With a privet hedge, presumably a Ligustrum species, just shear it when you think it needs a 'haircut'. If anything, consider saving your labour by pruning it less frequently. Hedges look more attractive when they are somewhat loose and irregular. Keeping a shrub rigidly rectangular is a pointless exercise in ugliness.
