Cherokee Chief Dogwood

I planted a young, bare-root Cherokee Chief dogwood last summer. This spring, it had it's first bloom -- only one bloom, but it was white. I was expecting red. Am I wrong to expect red?

Chief should have been red, Cherokee Princess however is White
