Benne is another name for Sesame (Sesamum indicum) in the family Pedaliaceae. As with any cultivated crop there are a number of different cultivars. Unhulled sesame seeds come in a variety of colors (black, red, yelowl, tan, etc.), but the commonly seen white sesame seeds are ones that have been hulled to remove the seed coat, sometimes they have also already been pressed to remove the oil.
