We all know that if trees are left to themselves they turn into girt big things that drop leaves and branches all over the place

This is how to stop them turning girt :)

First prune the root tips, this will cause new roots to grow from the base of the tree, forming a much denser fibrous root ball.

Pot it up and then form a stiff bit of wire into the shape you want the tree to form.

Gently lash the trunk to it with some thinner wire and leave it on till next year.

Finish off with some moss or stones :)

When the new leaves come in the spring, remove them and it'll grow a new set of smaller leaves.
