I've always known alfalfa was an amazing plant:

"It is possible to treat in situ soil and water resources for farming on Mars to sustain human missions and permanent settlements.

US scientists discovered that alfalfa plants may be the key to growing healthy vegetables on the red planet.

They found that alfalfa grows well in a volcanic soil that mimics Martian regolith, and that the alfalfa could then be turned into fertiliser to help grow turnips, radishes and even lettuce."

Forget growing potatoes! ALFALFA may be the key to farming on Mars (msn.com)

Now those folks need to look at Sunn Hemp...an even more amazing plant.

I know Martian atmosphere is pretty thin, but at 95% carbon dioxide why shouldn't plants be able to use it? I would think water might be the problem, I know there is some there, but it is heavy stuff if you need to import it.
