I am new to growing roses and just bought a piece of property with a few rose bushes and I want to plant more. I was just wondering how far back you should cut the roses in the fall? I cut them back a bit, but I saw a neighbors and hers were cut back to only about 6 inches tall.

I prune mine quite harshly once the risk of frost has gone - usually around March here in the UK. There is some good advice on the RHS site (y)

I used to think it was a big deal, but it's actually fairly simple.

You can cut back modest 12" - 18" or hard 6".
Leave 3 to 5 canes.
Cut about a 1/2" above an outward facing bud
Make the cut diagonal so it cant have water sitting on the cut
Doesn't really freeze much here so Jan - Feb for me
Once spring starts tend and feed

For roses I use Bayer 3 in 1

We had one at our old house and usually cut them down to the fence size as it grows very tall. Just this past summer though, I let the morning glory flowers grow and they choked the rose almost to dead. So down went the morning glory!

Thank you very much for all the information. I will definitely try the Bayer 3 in 1 on my roses. I was not aware to make the cut diagonal, so I will do that. Thanks!
