Bamboo query - can i thin out?

I have a bamboo hedge which has got very thick. I want to cut it back, but I can see it's all brown underneath the green foliage. If i cut it back will I just be left with a brown hedge, or will the green go back? Many thanks.

If there is any rhizome left in the soil, it will grow back. You can also thin it out by removing some of the canes all the way to the ground while leaving half or more. Some will sprout new growth from nodes that are newly exposed to sun.
