My first year growing them too. Not a female bloom in site for me yet! Next year I'll do transplants.

I hope it will survive. I have never grown a watermelon before.
For now, one was attack by some sort of fungus from underneath. 4 big ones left and doing well, I reaise them from soil to pretect from moisture. However for some reason, the canteloupes are now bigger than the watermelon even though the watermelon had one month of head start.. Weird..

My biggest cantaloupe disappeared of the vine last night. It had finally gotten to a size where I thought it wouldn't die. I think it was a rat. I have chickens so they can sometimes be a problem. That or one of my kids picked it. :(

Rat probably not the culprit, they will just create a hole and eat the inside.

That's the copper sulphate from the Bordeaux mix I spray the tomatoes with, they're both growing in the greenhouse.

I ended up with one edible canteloupe this year. Something ate one on the vine and about a dozen didn't make it past golf ball size. I pulled mine out already as it was not looking healthy and my garden was getting a bit crowded. They are rewarding to grow, but take a lot of time and space.
