Where to fertilize?

when you fertilize fruit trees, do you fertilize ONLY at drip line area or from drip line and go in a little bit like a foot or so so you can cover a larger area? What's the correct way of fertilizing please? And I guess this way of fertilizing will apply to all kind of plants and shrubs and not just fruit trees right?

The drip line feeder roots are the newest roots and therefore there aren't as many of them than as inward toward the trunk, but the entire area from the drip line to fairly close to the trunk should be fertilized. And yes, this applies to most all plants.
