When Planting Herbs Indoors...?

What's the smallest pot/container I could use and still have a healthy plant? I cook a lot and I love having my own herbs to use since fresh herbs taste so much better, and they're so much cheaper. However, we don't have a ton of space in our backyard, and I kind of want to reserve it for a few vegetables, and we also don't have much space in our little kitchen. I realize I can't grow a healthy plant in something as small as a starter pot, but how small could I go to still have a nice plant?

Well, I use those small black containers some plants from the nurseries come from for many of my herbs, and no problems to far. Some herbs don't even require that much space, so don't worry too much about it and experiment a little!

I agree, experiment. You could maybe take a look at root systems of plants you already have growing and see how much they would need. You might have to fertilize or find a way to supplement the soil if there isn't much food in it.

To be honest rather than trying to grow herbs individually in small pots where the plants would probably - very quickly become root bound - as there are many other alternative ways of growing a multitude of plants in limited spaces - maybe it would be worth considering growing your herbs in either multilevel planters, window boxes, stacker pots, or

having a one pot herb garden such as this

maybe even in hanging baskets

all of which come in many, many sizes all suitable for both indoor and outdoor growing - especially as it would mean that you would be able to grow a great more than if you planted everything in individual pots :)

Those hanging baskets would look just perfect in the space above my kitchen sink. I wonder why I haven't already done that! That's lovely and practical.

I love these hanging baskets, they look very pretty! Growing herbs in them sounds like a great idea.
TheElephantsCafe, the windowsill in my kitchen is narrow, but I managed to fit five herbs there. They really don't need much space. I always plant them in small flower pots.
