What's wrong with the tree? Bark split

Hi

Looking for some advice on what might be wring with this tree.

Only just noticed that the bark is split up the middle. I can see lots of ants running up and down it (not sure if this is relevant but thought it was worth mentioning).

When tree grows fast, it will bust its bark because the bark growth can't keep up with the internal tree growth. Also during Winter, a tree can bust its bark from the cold temps, and the bark is hit with full Sun. Another cause is from mechanical damage from physical contact. I would cut the loose bark off and keep an eye on the tree. If it get worse then it could be from other conditions (water or nutrients). Keep me posted if it gets worse.

We HAVE had a lot of unexpected, out of the ordinary, hot weather here in the UK, so that may be a factor.

I know little of trees, but do know some shed bark naturally e.g. Birch.

So, just over a year on... this tree has more splits, there are still ants running up and down it, and the leaves look a bit 'dodgy'....
After the original post, I had a very well respected tree surgeon come over and trim the tree ; he said it was nothing to worry about, but im not so sure now the leaved are looking a bit withered...
advice appreciated

It looks/seems like it's surrounded by pavement, if that's correct, that can't be good for its health.

Almost certainly aphids causing the leaf curl, unfurl one or two to see them. If found get a photo and put it into AI to identify and then look up treatment for them - not fatal.

I looked up about cherry trees shedding bark and apparently it's normal for some varieties to shed bark as they grow and how much shedding depends on variety.

Although, the severity and location of the peeling can sometimes be an indication of abnormal stress, such as severe frost or sunscald or even extreme temperature swings. And it can also be an indication of disease.

The tree can usually overcome these causes of peeling; however, if the tree was improperly planted, such as buried too deep, that can exacerbate these problems and the tree will only get worse as it ages.

That caught my eye, because my city has some company plant a bunch of trees in my area and they are all buried too deep, i.e. you can't see the root flare and the trunk of the tree looks just like a telephone pole where it enters the soil.
