What's eating my basil?

I can't figure out what is eating my basil plants. I've checked them early morning and late at night and do not see any bugs or signs of bugs (e.g., webbing). They are in containers so I doubt it's slugs. Can I treat them with something (what?) if the insect is not identified? Thanks.
