I'm considering a hanging chair for my garden, but since it rains frequently in the UK, I want to make sure I choose one that will withstand the weather without getting damaged. What features should I look for when purchasing one to ensure it’s durable and easy to maintain?

Metal will last the longest but wicker would look prettier.

Whatever you do --- DO NOT buy any outdoor furniture made from resin. There is a lot of resin wicker and bamboo-looking furniture that mimics the real thing, but don't be fooled. Resin is just polypropylene/plastic.

I've paid top dollar for chairs and tables made of resin. They start out looking really nice, but don't believe the hype about them being "durable." I suppose it depends on the basic makeup of the plastic. Maybe some are more long-lasting than others and many even tout that they're a recycled plastic product, but ---- in the end ---- you're buying a product that is going to start shedding bits and ends up in the landfill.

In the case of resin furniture you don't get what you pay for. You don't get something that will last for many years.

Hi and welcome.

We've a set of four imitation rattan chairs and four padded loungers.

They're here in a room I built in the back of the garage.

They come out when we need them. I find it no bother.
Any sort of garden furniture left outside all year in the UK will deteriorate, whatever it's made of.

Now that makes sense.

Thanks for all the advice!
It’s been really useful. I’m definitely thinking metal now, with washable cushions I can store indoors. I like the idea of having stuff you can just bring out when needed. It will definitely save a lot of hassle in the long run.

Anyone got a good recommendation for a cover that actually lasts longer than one winter?

In my experience, outdoor furniture made from aluminum or resin wicker is the easiest to maintain—lightweight, rust-resistant, and easy to clean with just soap and water. Cushions with removable, washable covers are a big plus too. If you're shopping around, At Home has a great selection. You can call them at at home phone number for availability or help.

Totally agree! Aluminum and resin wicker are great choices. My grandfather actually loved wicker furniture, and I have a cabinet styled with resin wicker that I’ve been using for the past 2–3 years. That said, I’m not entirely sure how well resin wicker holds up when it’s left outdoors, fully exposed to sun and rain over time. But thanks for the suggestion, I’ll definitely look into it!

I have my black iron outdoor set since 1979, just needs a spray paint of black rust preventative when some rust is noticed, and only on those spots. the pillows are kept in a water sealed large container. Need I say more. Do the math. its a round table and 4 chairs. and I love pulling two chairs together, putting my feet up, nestling my butt down and enjoy a read, can't do that with a hanging thing.

I have to have something that will hold up with me. Weigh about 250 and can't just sit down I drop. Then I have to have something I can get up from without help.

I am sure you have been told you need to try to slow down the drop in sitting, even for seconds. use your thigh muscles. start small.
