Hebe's are nice plants that love sunshine and take dry area's. There are tons of varieties. I try to grow here but some aren't so hardy and I guess they are from New Zealand which is a bit more mild then our area.

Cotoneaster tolerate all sorts of conditions, hot, dry, wet, warm so I guess if you can get them there they should grow ok.

Clay in nz? Which part of the country are you in? I worked in Christchurch and there wasn't any clay to be found around there... maybe the north island is different. Anyway in western holland where we have very heavy clay, Portuguese Laurel (Prunus Lusitanica) grow very well. Hebe's, Carpinus betulus, Hydrangea, Syringa vulgaris, are some other options that grow well on clay.
