What kind of plant is this and why is it unhealthy?

Hey all --

I recently got this (once) beautiful plant from a friend who had to move out of state. It is 12 years old and was in pretty good condition when we got it (about a month ago).

First, does any one know what type of plant this is?

Next, any thoughts/advice on why it's looking so unhealthy? It has been pretty cloudy/rainy the past month, so it's been getting less sun than it probably should. We've been watering it regularly and keeping the soil moist. Finally, it did get kind of banged up during transportation (pretty sure several roots were severed) a month ago.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It'd be sad to have this plant die on us given its age!

Thank you!

What Tjohn said. Don't keep the soil moist! The roots will start rotting and then you will lose the plant for sure. The browning on the leaves indicates too much water, most likely.

With most houseplants I've had the best luck with letting the soil get pretty much completely dry, then giving them a good soak. Watering relatively infrequently and deeply is much better than frequent, shallow watering.

Also most plants seem to enjoy a shower. :) Make sure there's a screen over the drain and soak them but good with barely tepid water.
