What is this flowering bush?

This brown leafed bush flowers with purple flowers early spring. Trying to identify what it is so I can figure out what to do with it, what it needs.

It started getting sick recently. brown tips that started taking over the entire bush, from bottom up. also small tiny insects flying around. might be unrelated.

What part of the U.S. are you in? (Knowing that will help figure out what might be perennial there.)

It does not look familiar to me. Hopefully someone will recognize it. Can you describe the flowers? Big/little? Dark/light purple? The shape? How many petals?
