I planted helianthus occidentalis (Western sunflower, also called Fewleaf sunflower) yesterday. Looking forward to seeing it bloom eventually. Kind of nice that the one bare-root plant I ordered included four plants along the rhizomes.

Those bonus plants are so welcome here too.

Watering and feeding the birds of course... One of the Robins has chicks and is coming to the door in the mornings to remind me of the fact!
Feeding the birds is becoming more problematical, a lot of birds are dying from a mite that affects the back of their throats and gets passed around at bird tables. The population of greenfinches is now critical apparently. The RSPB recommends not feeding from flat surfaces, like bird tables, and that fat ball feeders are better than seed feeders. They say change the location of the feeders weekly, so food does not accumulate underneath them, and clean them when you do

First squash of the year (yellow and zucchini (Courgette). We especially like them young and tender, blooms and all. The pictures you often see of huge squash fruits may impress rookies but for eating you can't beat the young ones.

Chaffinches in my garden had this a few years ago, a terrible, slow death for birds. It didn't seem to affect the Greenfinches here though. Recommendation was to stop feeding them for six weeks and to disinfect all feeders regularly.

Harvested the first batch of Tomatillos today.

In case you might not be familiar with them, Old Farmer's Almanac describes them thus:

"Tomatillos (Physalis philadelphica or P. ixocarpa) are not green tomatoes—they’re a separate nightshade species that produce small, tart fruits inside papery husks. Plants typically reach 3–4 feet tall, branch heavily, and yield prolifically when conditions are right"

We use them primarily in Salsa Verde a wonderfully flavored green dip.

Well watered everything in the Greenhouse. I have been so afraid of Root Rot I’ve found I’ve been underwatering.

Mixed up about 300 pounds of soil.
