Can you requisition a corner of the fridge maybe ?

I do a lot of cold stratification in the fridge, but this is the cutoff period for that. I don't like trying to keep young plants alive through summer. I like having them ready to plant in May-June.

I dug out my new garden space today. Not too big, about 48 square feet. Long-term goal is common ninebark, but I will fill this space with native prairie plants for the time being until I can get a ninebark established.

I find that my bean plants all seem to benefit from filling in dirt around the sprout after they get up a few inches.

This row has 50 ft of pintos and about 30 ft of bush green beans.

Sunflowers coming on strong now...but we sure could use some rain.

I've been sharing strawberry runners with some friends, and they're not "gardening" people, but i say, "hey, i was expanding my patch and i have way more runners than i thought, do you want some?". And i wait a week for them to have a day they can plant, even though I told them the sooner the better because they're leafing out pretty hard.

So i dig them and then they plant them 2 days later thinking they're doing good and then don't even water them in.

Water your plants in people

But i guess they'll just have to wait for the rain. I don't think they die, but i do think they'll be stunted. They probably would have had some fruit this May even.

Transplanting now is different than mail order dormant plants because mine aren't stored in a refrigerator. Dormant plants don't need water like just leafed out plants do

And whenever you transplant, water it in, because the capillaries in the soil are not established until you do, so even if the soil is moist, the plant you just put there isn't.

If it's been growing in a pot and doesn't immediately need ground moisture it's okay.

Couldn't get a clear photo tonight but I finished the outline for my next native garden expansion. This one is quite a bit bigger than the one I posted yesterday. Hoping to have the lawn completely cut out of here by the end of the month, but it'll probably happen much sooner - just depends on our weather.

I honestly hate doing this in spring, it's soooo much easier to create a garden going into fall when you can direct sow in winter. Doing it in spring is going to mean a lot more weeding to deal with, but I'd rather start getting things established this year instead of waiting another year.

Your guess is as good as mine. :ROFLMAO: I have no real plan for this space - I'm just doing it on a whim.

Common blue violets will definitely move in here quickly on their own. And I'm definitely going to put some wild geranium in here around the redbud tree. I may put zig zag goldenrod here, too. And any random seedlings I can find - eastern red columbine seedlings always pop up in my woodchip pathway, so they can be transplanted here.
It'll be interesting to see what I come up with and how I pull this off.

Interesting to see what develops. I kind of thought that might be a redbud in your photo but then figured it was too far north for them there.

The missus said she wanted some 'mini' tomatoes, so I bought some that looked a bit different, a yellow one, a plum, and 'Tiny temptations', Planted them yesterday, Two packets were labelled "Average contents five seeds" and one six seeds, there were eight in one and seven in the other two. Ihave seen this before, makes me wonder if there is some poor bloke only getting one or two seeds, or did they mean 'Minimum contents'?
