Saw these beautiful trees on a walk. Can someone help me identify what they are? Looked like a maple leaf? Are the spiky seeds(?) edible or medicinal? Am interested in learning more about native plants which are.

That sure looks like the sweetgum tree (Liquidambar styraciflua). I have literally hundreds of them on my property. Nice shade tree but pesky balls that are a pain to walk on and/or mow over.
