These pests are the bane of my life. I normally see them in abundance floating on the soil surface after I water my container Wisteria, but now have found them congregating under a pot on a wooden shelf. Are they harmful to the plant as the Wisteria seems to be thriving year on year & have remained despite my repotting the Wisteria & washing a lot of the older soil off etc.

Hard to tell from the picture, but those may be termite larva. Image search "Termite larva" to get a better view.

Don't think we have termites in the UK :). Haven't heard of soil maggots - have to investigate :)

Termites not currently resident in UK. The occasional colony has been found after arriving in timber; these have been terminated with extreme prejudice involving chemicals followed by burning all infected and potentially infected wood in the vicinity.
Could be fungus gnat larvae, hard to tell without a close up, in focus picture showing head and legs clearly.
If the wisteria is thriving I wouldn't worry too much.
