What are "points"?

I'm rather dense when it comes to forum language, so I don't understand "points". How does one earn them and what purpose do they serve once earned?

I have often wondered about that since nobody has any that I have seen

It's a feature of the forum software where we can award "points" for things like being registered for x years, or made x posts, or received x likes. I don't think it adds too much though, so I had just disabled it for now . Maybe we'll try it one day though.
