Watermelon and sugar water?

my dad told me that about a week before I pick my watermelon, I should pour some sugar water on it to sweeten it up. Is there any truth to this?

Any truth? yes. It is not a direct impact but rather the idea of using molasses in water (which would be better) to feed the micro biodrome in the soil, which in turn interacts with the roots and allows better uptake of those nutrients the plant uses to make its own sugars.
