Has anyone seen this grow on their butternut squash plant?? This was my first year growing butternut squash and the frost came fast here in Michigan so the plant died back fast and I had to pick all my squash. I saw this yellow ball growing that continued to grow and grow and looks like the large bulb part of the flower. When I picked it it is SOLID. I have not cut it open yet. Anyone have any ideas?

Short answer - yes, I've gotten round squash on my butternut vines.

Chances are either the parent was a hybrid with another squash or the fruit was just weird. Squash pollination is rather promiscuous.

Butternut are a type of the same species that grows things like some pumpkins and gourds. Butternut is a member of the Cucurbita moschata species and I prefer this one to the other two species as they have solid vines and the squash vine borer pest doesn't bother them.

Now that you bring that up I did not have any issues with squash vine borers like previous years. Thanks so much for the reply!
