Hi guys,

I am busy installing a pool at my house and have dug a huge hole leaving me with mountains of soil. I wanted to post a picture but cant figure out how to. Anyway people arw suggesting that i spread this soil out over my garden as a top lawn dressing but i dont want to make a giant mess its pretty red and muddy (raining). Do you think this is a good idea or should i just haul it away

Only the top few inches is technically "topsoil". What's underneath is less fertile and even deeper is subsoil which has very little nutrition. So, spreading it over your lawn isn't what I would want to do.

I would suggest that, if you want to keep the soil you could create a berm, plant into it and around it and that will give you a sort of cozy feel around your pool area. Like being tucked into a little sunken spring in the woods type of coziness.

Yes, a bit of variation in contour can really add to a garden, did you keep track of the top soil, or is it all heaped up together with the rest? If it is you can still get away with skimming the area where you want it and replacing the top soil after building your slope, it won't be a thick as it was, but the soil underneath will be the better for being worked a bit, there are also plants that will do better than others on it
