If you were in the government, what would you do to tackle all these multinationals, monarchs, oligarchs, celebrities siphoning their taxes to tax havens ...

Their defence is Tax avoidance is NOT illegal ..

I don't think there is much that can be done as long as what they are doing is "legal". Laws would have to change, and those with the real money are usually the backers of the lobbyists who pay off the politicians...who make the laws, at least here in the United States.

Apparently, the UK is an active culprit via its islands such as Isle of Man, Jersey, Ireland, Cayman Island.. Pay at source is the best way to go. Democracy is not a word they know amongst the evil greedy circle. They changed the laws to squirrel the money away and Tim Cook said that we not only pay tax, we also respect the spirit of the tax law.. Apple actively asked if they could avoid tax when they got bumped off Ireland now they are in Jersey, Nothing changed.

There is a show in the UK called Mrs Browns. The cross-dressing Mrs Brown who's a man pays his actors, including his daughter, wages to a far flung island and then these actors are appointed as ADVISERS as to how these money should be used. They then loan the money back to themselves... Not a penny tax paid.

Who's going to pay for the infrastructure improvements, NHS, education, defence?. All their educated shameless accountants or spokespersons put up a straight face and say these sneaky tax avoidants are dumb, they don't know a thing, the ADVISERS do it on their behalf - and these avoidants include the queen, Lewis Hamilton and loads others... not forgetting saint Bono who asked the UK public to donate to Red Nose day, whilst he squirrelled his wealth to buy a shopping mall abroad..

LEGAL but those in the middle class pay every dime whilst the super rich get richer .. at the expense of the general public... It's not a soap box experience as this affects our children,,

#1.....make lobbys illegal
#2 term limits
#3 straight tax

Unfortunately, the Congress would have to change these things, and they are the ones that benefit most by NOT changing them. It's like having the Fox guard the Henhouse.

Bottom line, @alp, is they don't care. The ones with the money and the power really don't care...and, this has been true throughout history. The only thing that ever changes this situation, albeit temporary, is revolution. And, even when the revolution is successful, eventually a new crop of folks with money and power crop up.

Of course, tax avoidance is not illegal but it is morally wrong. We are talking mega bucks here and this money would help pay for services and amenities.
These are greedy people and businesses...they make their money from masses of ordinary people so should pay more; if not the government should close loopholes and make clear the spirit of paying taxes in full :)

In the States we have the perfect solution to these types of problems. It is called Convention of States or Article V Convention. It allows the individual states to come together and pass an amendment to the constitution. It could be used to invoke term limits and to come up with a fair tax. The problem is that the American people can no longer think for themselves and they trust Washington to do their thinking for them. I try to stay out of political discourse so I will now go out and watch my garden grow!

Problem is we need 34 of 50 states (two thirds) for a Convention of States, and so far only 5 states have passed a resolution for convention - Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee. For an amendment to be ratified, it takes 38 out of 50 states (three quarters). Perhaps it will happen at some point in the future. We can only hope and pray.

Tax avoidance should be made illegal.. Tax at source..

Let's put it this way, that is exactly why Tim Cook said he respected the spirit of the taxation laws.. as they allowed them to fiddle ..

I hope to see the block chain technology of unique numbers used to put a small micro tax on every transaction, and thus remove the antique tax systems we have today. Those that spend, where ever they spend, would be free to not even file paperwork.
