Tanish brown splotch on some green tomatoes

Curious if you guys could tell me what this is? I've seen several tan/brown splotches on my green tomatoes - they don't appear to be blossom end rot, because they are on the sides of the tomato and not on the bottom. Curious what you guys think this is? I also see these black bodied clear wing gnats on my tomato stems - I've seen them almost every year, but don't know what they are.

My initial thought was sun scalding but the pictures don't seem to bear that out.

It's been a few days, what do they look like now?

Here is a photo of another one I found. It doesn't look like blossom end rot and it's not near the bottom of the developing fruit either. It looks kinda like bacterial canker but I had a sample tested early on at the ISU extension office and they didn't detect that.
