Sump pump in a well

Does anyone have experience using a sump pump in their home well? I just moved into a new home and a friend gave me a sump pump for my well. It is not a very deep well and the pump seems straightforward. I'd still like to hear from someone who has experience before I try it myself.

That all depends on what the head is on the pump or in other words how far up hill the pump is designed to pump. Most sump pumps do not have a very long head whereas centrifical pumps do. All you can do is try it and see
