I never fertilize any of mine . I crumble up any leaves that die and add them to the middle of the plant and keep it watered

What good timing for me. I'm just trying my hand at a garden feature of stag ferns. I've wired them but apparently they can be nailed just as safely according to my "fern lady". I have attached them to a slice of ornamental cherry and am trying to think of ways to display it other than just leaning it against something. I guess by keeping it free standing I can move it around to hide from the sun. I was thinking of getting some sort of metal stand made with spokes that go into the ground but I guess it will all become a bit heavy. I would appreciate any ideas. One thing I was told was to put Spagnum Moss behind the plant to retain water. Any other advice would be great Dr Case.

I would hang the cherry wood with a copper ground wire and hang it in a tree

This is my smallest stag horn I know it's ten years old it takes time for them to grow

That is a huge stag horn. I'll have to be patient. I thought the cherry wood would swing around too much if I was to hang it without the bottom being secured as well. We do get some strong wind here. Maybe I could secure it from the base as well. Thanks

Moss behind the plant will help hold water
As it grows it will grow all the way around the log and you won't see it
I might be tempted to cut the log in half and make two plants ,in your zone they will grow a lot faster

Hmm I never stuck a banana peel in one of mine
I just crumble any dead fronds off the plant and add them to the inside of the plant
When they are small maybe add a wad of sphagnum moss to get them started
