It looks fairly dry & close cut to the earth. Try fertalizing it, reseeding, saturating it thoroughly with water to help dilute any excess nitrogen or urea (if you have pets) & let it grow long and healthy for a while before mowing. Consider not mowing as short in that area, or growing a tree or bush that will offer partial shade to the area. It could be burned from the sun, or pet urine. It could be being killed off by a weed grass or soil pathogen too. Doesn't look like high traffic damage.

This time of year its mainly bugs and fungus. Pull roots up and examine, dig soil up and filter for larvae etc. St Aug is a sweet salad full of moisture and a very popular dish when it is mature.

It could these Mole Crickets. They eat grass roots. I would wet it down really good then dig into it and see if a mole cricket or two come up. They're quick so you have to keep an eye out.
